Til tross for at han hadde utenlandsk statsborgerskap som ville ha gitt ham trygg passasje ut av Gaza, nektet han å dra, og valgte i stedet å stå ved sitt folk. The Last Doctor Standing follows the extraordinary resilience of Dr Abu Safiya and his medical team, who endured over 16 months of relentless pressure, including repeated Israeli military attempts to evacuate and destroy the hospital.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s defiance was instrumental in enabling over 450,000 Palestinians to remain in northern Gaza and resist forced displacement. During this period, he lost most of his medical team. His son Ibrahim was killed, his other son Idris was shot, and his family home was completely demolished.
Despite holding foreign citizenship that would have allowed him safe passage out of Gaza, he refused to leave, choosing instead to stand by his people. He was eventually detained by Israeli forces, and his whereabouts remain unknown. The hospital was later set on fire and put out of service.
