Justice denied [dokumentar + samtale m/ regissør]

Den 28. juli 1993 døde Joy Gardner som følge av at politi og deportasjonsoffiserer brukte makt for å holde henne tilbake, bandt henne med et kroppsbelte og ankelstropper og kneblet munnen hennes med 4 meter med tape. Det ble et nasjonalt ramaskrik da folk hørte hvordan Joy hadde dødd. I dokumentaren, Justice Denied’ hører vi fra medlemmer av familien hennes om Joys død, som rapporterer om reaksjonene på det i det svarte samfunnet, undersøker to andre dødsfall relatert til immigrasjonskontroll, det til Kwanele Siziba og Joseph Nnalue, og spør hva som er de politiske omstendighetene som la disse dødsfallene skje.

Filmen følger kampen til Joys familie i deres kamp for rettferdighet og for at sannheten skal komme frem. Filmen tar for seg hvordan media utførte et karakterdrap på Joy, for å rettferdiggjøre måten hun ble drept på og hvordan dette ble dekket over.

Filmen spør hvorfor senior polititjenestemenn og innvandringsmyndighetene, ikke ble siktet for deres involvering i denne kontroversielle hendelsen. Gjennom "Justice Denied" snakker familiene ut for å holde minnet om sine kjære i live, for å kreve rettferdighet og for å utfordre fryktregimet, etablert ved måten Storbritannias håndhever immigrasjonskontroll på.

The film follows the struggle of Joy's family in their fight for justice and for the truth to be exposed. The film examines how the media carried out a character assassination of Joy in order to justify the way in which she was killed and how this fed into a widespread cover-up. The highly controversial programme asks why senior police officers and the immigration service did not face charges for their involvement in this controversial incident. Throughout 'Justice Denied' the families speak out to keep the memory of their loved ones alive, to demand justice and to challenge the climate of fear created by Britain's enforcement of immigration controls.

He has campaigned on issues of policing and human rights abuses in Europe and the resistance to them and directed and produced the radical and controversial cinema documentary Injustice (2001), which has won many awards, including Best Documentary - BFM London Film Festival 2002 and Best Documentary (Human Rights) - One World Film Festival 2003. In his documentary Ultraviolence, shown in Arbeiderfilmfestivalen 2021 i Bergen the families of the victims of police violence demand justice. They ask why society ignores human rights abuses by agents of the state. This reflection on resistance is poignant and political, capturing the brutality and trauma as well as the unrelenting fightback of those who will not be silent about state violence.
